heard rumblings about this mexican restaurant over the past year and had the opportunity to try it out the other day.

simple room on victoria st in the killarney area. relatively authentic mexican, no los margaritas abominations here.

tacos are $2 (.50 more for cheese). 2 small tortillas, meat, onions and cilantro. nice and simple. a variety of fillings are available:
* AL PASTOR: marinated pork loin, slow-roasted with spices, chiles and pineapple
* BISTECK: Chopped Steak
* LONGANIZA: cured pork ground sausage with chili and spices
* CARNE ENCHILADA: shredded pork loin bathed in a chile sauce
* CARNITAS: succulent pieces of slow roasted pulled pork and herbs
* POLLO: chicken poached with Mexican herbs & shredded
* BARBACOA DE BORREGO: slow-braised lamb loin in a secret house blend of chiles and spices

i was excited to try the lamb, not a standard filling but it was a bit of a letdown. a little tougher than i expected and not as seasoned as i would’ve liked. in general the meats were a lot less marinated/seasoned than i like. i’ll have to go with don guacamole for the win here.

i do like their salsa bar though. 10 different homemade varieties organized from mild to hot. all very tasty.

SPLITZ IS OPEN IN VANCOUVER!!!!

coming back from a meeting in richmond this afternoon and we stopped in at wingnuts on main for a nice healthy lunch. first time there, can’t complain. tasty wings, IPA on tap, lots of flavours (the spicy thai peanut is a good one) and if you’re so inclined they offer deep fried mars bars or deep fried snickers. kicking it old school london styles.

however, as we were driving away, i noticed that Splitz Grill’s first Vancouver location is finally open. 4242 Main Street. so obviously i told steph when i got home and well we just had to make the trip back to sample it. and apart from using a different bun, its exactly like it should be. ah precious grilled meat and garlic mayo…. luckily its just on the edge of my comfortable walking distance from home so we won’t be there every other day.

actually, main street is turning into quite the tasty little neighbourhood, what with Toshi’s and their spicy agedashi, baked black cod and sass rolls (not on the menu but they can make it for you); Sun Sui Wah with the best dimsum in town; the Reef and their rotis and mojitos; Cantina Mitra and their delicious chicken shwarmas; Wingnuts and now Splitz Grill…

everything’s coming up Milhouse!

the girlfriend went out of town for work so i decided to fix some nagging issues with the bathroom. what a pain in the ass. its been three straight days of 14 hour work days on my knees. my legs are so stiff and my back is so sore i think i’m going to die. i’m old.

oh and when i took steph to the airport i played around with their big luggage scales and made the mistake of weighing myself… somebody buy me lipo. actually i think i’m going to go on a cleanse and then a diet and just generally clean up my eating.

speaking of which, i finally caved after at least a month of watching those damn “baconator” commercials. its not bad. it just needs some lettuce and tomato to make it not so dry. and the bacon needs to be thicker slices. i’d eat it again.

update: while trying to find a picture of the baconator i found the nutritional information. 830 calories, 51 gr of fat. i don’t think i’ll be having another one…

the only thing i was interested in was the Green Works building supply co but they’re like a block from my office and i’ve been walking by them almost everyday, just been too lazy to actually walk in and browse.

the most embarrassing part of the show had to be their so-called fashion show. only 6 models (including one girl who walked like a parade horse), maybe 10 brands (2-3 of which were accessory brands), dragged out over 15-20 minutes. gag. doesn’t Karl pull out like 100 different looks in 20 minutes?

on a side note, found out the Waterfront Centre has a “La Torilleria”. looks the same as the whistler one but don’t know if its the same chain or not. regardless the chicken taco salad was damn fine.
