its been a while since a movie got me interested enough to find out more about who made it. drive is one of those movies. from a relatively unknown Danish director Nicholas Refn, it is wonderfully atmospheric, well acted, stylish and engaging. a simple story with a minimalist approach to dialog. the opening sequence is what i’m dubbing a “cerebral car chase” and sets the tone for the rest of the movie. the electro-synth-pop soundtrack works perfectly too. highly recommended.

outrage. controversy. nothing spreads like wildfire around ye olde information superhighway like a good old witch hunt. it seems to me that there is some sort of correlation between the rising popularity of social media and the declining lack of critical thinking. rumour becomes fact, popular opinion becomes your opinion, snappy headlines obscure the nuance and everybody just gets a little bit dumber.

so here’s my request of you: slow the fuck down. before you RT or post to your wall, take a minute to find out what’s really going on and try to understand it. apply a bit of critical thinking. for any piece of news you digest, ask yourself: who wrote it, why did they write it, and what do they stand to gain from writing it. form your own opinion, only you can think like you. you’ll start to see the world a little differently and your brain will thank you for the exercise.

walking to work has its benefits; like being able to let your mind wander rather than expending energy thinking about traffic. speaking of energy, somehow i got on the random topic of energy usage while walking. so here’s my random scientific question of the day.

to maintain a set walking speed of say 3km/h:
does the momentum generated by swinging your arms while you walk reduce the energy expenditure of the legs enough such that your total energy expended is less than if your hands were in your pockets and your legs had to make up for the lack of forward momentum generated by swinging arms.

something to ponder. if you actually know the answer please hit me up on twitter and tell me.

This social media crap is really getting out of hand. Twitter especially. Its like a bunch of girls at a pajama party telling each other how great they look. Seriously, somebody writes a blog post, then auto-tweets it and then a bunch of their friends retweet it. Think about that. Republishing a piece of auto-generated content when said content is only a notification. Bring that out to the real world. That’s like getting a text that your parking meter’s about to expire and then your friends all tell their friends that your parking meter’s about to expire. What the fuck!

Write some real goddamn content and tell me something interesting or don’t waste my time.

Oh and big deal if you have a gajillion followers. You didn’t even have to spend any cognitive energy to make that happen. Its like those people who collect curios. Their house is just a giant clusterfuck of knick knacks that you can’t do anything without knocking one over. I got one word for you…’edit’.

ha. might as well live up to my moniker and start off the year all bitter. although i have nothing to be bitter about. its not like i made a resolution to be more or less bitter. in fact i made no resolutions at all. why? because i don’t believe improving yourself should be limited to once a year. it should be an ongoing process.

pretty long winded start to this post huh? well get used to it. since i’ve been using twitter, its been taking up the more frequent posts leaving me with less to say here. so i think i’m going to try to write more lengthy and hopefully more insightful posts here in exchange for reduced frequency.

i have to say that after keeping this little blogging thing going for a long while, i have much respect for people that can keep up the dialogue. it requires a level of commitment that is commendable. even if all you’re writing about is what you had for breakfast and an indepth examination of the end result of that meal’s travels through your digestive system. (that was a round about metaphor for shit in case you missed it).

but back to writing and motivation. what motivates people to write? excess creativity? idle hands? dreams of financial windfalls? creation of a false persona? self-brand management? something else?

…

screw it. i had cheerios for breakfast…
