oh porsche…too bad about the brand dilution eh?

sneaker doldrums

sneaker doldrums

there’s been a drought. perhaps not of biblical proportions but enough to leave me parched. i’ve almost given up on trying to find more sneakers. i blame it on the AF1. its stealing all the hype and creative juices. either that or i’m getting too damn old.

i mean let’s see… the AF1 comes in what, Classic, Premium, Supreme, probably a dozen collabos, original 6, city series, 360 outsole, its endless.

then there’s the endless Jordan reissues, Pigeon rehashes “inspired”.

i am however starting to back some of the adidas reissues though. we’ll see. i need those paul smith boots first though. oooh or maybe some timbalands, then i can be like X to the Z, Xzibit. what are those things in his hair anyway?

sharpest knife in the drawer

sharpest knife in the drawer

i’ve had this random fascination with japanese kitchen knives for a while. i don’t know why. i don’t cook that much but when i do, a good sharp knife is always handy. i never liked german blades, always felt too heavy and clunky for me.
i’ve managed to get a few global’s which are my favorite brand so far. nice and light, fits my hand well, sharp and good looking. however recently i’ve discovered some other japanese knives with something called a damascus steel which looks amazing. the craftsmanship and aesthetic is something else and i have no doubt that they’re sharp as hell.

ratatat remixes vol 2
pretty damn dizzope. very similar to vol 1, seems like a lot of the same chord progressions but slightly different. but new tracks to mash them onto so its all good. Slim Thug, Jay-Z and Biggie tracks are standout.

kanye – can’t tell me nothing mixtape
a bit of pure gold but mostly pure ass. r&b needs to pull a vanilla ice. stronger is going to be one hot track when the album drops though.

rick ross – port of miami
some gold ol’ head nodding, thug-hop. don’t know why it took me so long to get around to checking it out, especially since hustlin’ has been killing it for so long.

go team – thunder lightning strike
another album i’m late to the party on. heard some of there stuff before but never knew who it was then i saw the trailer for the PS3 game littlebigplanet and the trailer was using this super catchy song and i had to figure it out and lo and behold. album is hipster/scenester but good nonetheless.

timbaland – present shock value
try army and navy value. ugh. craptastic in every sense of the word.

that’s it for now. on deck, new fabolous, talib kweli, rjd2, white stripes.

ah yes… that priceless line from the simpsons so eloquently uttered by one Montgomery Burns… this quote highlights my current dilemna as i require a new laptop. it goes without saying that it will be an apple but given my current employment status, funds are a little tight.

do i go for a slightly downspec’d refurb and max it out or go with a current model in a stock configuration? then there’s the issue of the new back to school promo for the free ipod but i do hate rebates.

i guess i’ll just have to wait until next week and see if anything new gets announced. but i am excited to get a new one.

ps. i always google for simpsons pics to include with my posts forgetting that i have them all on DVD and can just make my own. sheesh.

driving home last night down kingsway and i realized that pho bich nga is no longer there! what happened? it was always brought happy giggling when driving that stretch of road. so in order to properly eulogize the place, here’s my list of alternative names for when they decide to reopen (pronounce with ebonics):

pho nga wha
pho nga pls
pho bich pls

(of course all of these work equally well for non-pho restaurants).

wow, that’s bad

have you seen the new logo for London’s 2012 Olympics? its pretty bad. kind of a 80′s electro clash monstrosity gone wrong. the colors, the shapes, the way the olympic rings just don’t ‘fit’. our inukshuk logo is starting to look pretty damn good.

checked out the newly renovated Holt Renfrew today. damn nice store. huge. lots of different interior treatments and cool design details. leather covered tables. triangular skylights. etc. gave me lots of inspiration for the house. got dragged around some of the women’s stuff and i must say that balenciaga has got some cool ass trims. crazy metal buckles and snaps that are screwed together.

finally found a pair of g-star handcrafted denims. up until now they haven’t been available in canada so i was very stoked to see them live. so dope. black and silver rivets. whip stitching. the interior was completely finished. amazing detailing. however…$375. oeuf.

nice pair of paul smith boots. $695. just that right mix of worn looking yet new. nice layered leather outsole. don’t know what tops would go with it though.

the funniest part about the new holts? if you’re in the mall and you want to go to sport chek, you have to walk through holts. haha.
