pan’s labyrinth

pan's labyrinth

been anxiously awaiting this movie. unfortunately it opened up in limited release at first but luckily it opened locally this past weekend so we headed out to the theater. and boy was it worth it. one of my favorites of the past year and definitely worth checking out if you can.

the movie itself is almost like two separate movies stitched together but its done perfectly. the first story revolves around a sadistic spanish army captain trying to quell a revolt in the forest while awaiting the birth of his new son. the second story revolves around the new baby’s big sister and her foray into the world of fairytales.

the visuals, camera work, acting, character special effects were all fantastic. they perfectly created a two distinct worlds and brought their stories to life.

the movie is somewhat dark and a little sad. i can see why it started out as a limited release and why hollywood never made this movie. some may be distracted by the subtitles but go see it. its a treat.

how do they do it?

the iphone isn’t shipping for six months, has only been announced for barely six hours yet i can’t get away from it. i browse a pretty diverse and schizophrenic collection of websites but there it is. the iphone. fashion blogs, celebrity gossip sites, sneakerhead sites, news outlets, snowboarding sites, the list just goes on and on.

apple’s power to put its fingers firmly on the pulse of what we want is just uncanny but combined with their marketing prowess, and the strength of their brand and its cachet just blows me away. even coca-cola or nike can’t get that kind of press coverage for a product launch.

its no secret that i love my apple gear, but the emails i got today from non-mac owning friends and acquaintances that were all “have you seen the new iphone” was just crazy. even the goddamn fedex delivery guy was like “so what do you think of the new iphone?”

how fun would it be to work in their marketing department…

arrrrgggghhhhh….

arrrrgggghhhhh....

i need this now. not want… NEED!!! june cannot come fast enough.

go see it. i don’t usually like these kinds of movies but its got that quirky comedy thing down and the finale had me busting a gut. great to see steve currell in a more serious albeit hillarious role. and i was amazed at how i was able to overcome how much i hate greg kinnear and actually enjoy his character.

another jet li movie. another fine display of martial arts. another story where jet li sacrifices himself for the greater good of his country. not sure who the director was but it definitely wasn’t Zhang Yimou. i definitely missed the amazing cinematography that Zhang puts out. the story line was ok, definitely kept things moving along. i kept getting distracted by the horrible hair. some pretty amazing fight scenes. all in all not a bad way to kill an hour and a half.

countdown

the big apple product announcements are due on tues… anxiously waiting to see what toys they come up with this time. crossing my fingers hoping for the iphone. i’m such a geek. actually…is something still geeky if it wins industrial design awards? hmmmm…. maybe i’m not a geek.

memory lane

memory lane

i always enjoy talking to Kelly at 540 board shop in kelowna. he’s been in the game for so long and we always end up reminiscing about the good old days of snowboarding. he recently had a customer bring in a burton contact with baseless bindings circa 1995. we got into a big long discussion about things coming full circle since we got some new shit for 08 that is definitely inspired by some classic old technology.

he was also telling me about some crazy faux-snowboard thing that was essentially a molded crazy carpet that screwed onto a real skateboard deck. weird huh?

makes me wish i kept all my old riding gear. my original burton cruise 155. sims switchblade 165. burton pj 149. burton a-deck 149. i would have quite the museum if i kept everything i every rode. boohoo…

happy new year

hope you all had a good time and that the post-new year’s hangover wasn’t too severe. i don’t believe in resolutions so i didn’t make any. why only aim to improve yourself once a year? shouldn’t that be a daily proposition?

anyhoo…in order to start your year off right, i found a nice little article to put that extra little bounce in your step. start that new year with a bang so to speak.
