got sent a link today to a video on the cbc that made me all nostalgic. a news clip from 1985 up at mt. seymour about the newfangled sport of snowboarding.
my first day snowboarding was just after christmas in 1987.
my brother had just come back from australia where he had tried snowboarding and insisted
that i had to check it out. we drove down to bellingham and found a used burton cruise 155 with the original darth vader style bindings with the half inch thick baseplate, from a windsurf shop on the waterfront. the board had been painted black and sported a large tw-snow sticker as its only artwork. it was on consignment for $100. that was my brother’s christmas present to me.
the day after christmas, we drove up to whistler for a day trip despite my mother’s protestations. we stopped off on the shore to pick up one of his friends and off we went in his beat up old corolla. of course, the highway was chaos cause it was snowing puking out and we had to stop in squamish to buy tire chains from the gas station. once we slapped those on the car we were invincible, charging up the highway passing people three across and made great time.
of course when we hit whistler we weren’t ready to go just yet, none of us had boots or even proper winter gear. my brother insisted that we could just rent ski boots, not knowing about the difference between strap and plate bindings. the rental guys gave us some pretty weird looks when we said we just wanted to rent ski boots while holding our boards but did so anyways. of course it didn’t work, so foiled, we ended up at the source for sports in the village where we each bought a pair of neon colored sorel snow lions, a roll of duct tape and a pair of matching reusch leather gate bashing gloves. we were so hot.
so my outfit consisted of my old scotch-guarded ski pants and a crazy black and lime pullover bought from a factory outlet in toronto the year before. sorels in white, neon pink, green and blue. the aforementioned gloves in white, pink and lavender. i’m sure i had some ridiculous toque and goggles on too but we were finally read so with my newly acquired snowboard we hit the slopes.
of course we never made it home that night, the highway was shut down due to the snow. we ended up spending the night at seppo’s back when it was a hostel. and the rest, as they say, is history.
